CHAPTER 29
The Last Mysterious Visitor
Fifteen years after Seralyn first saw Daniel flying above the Luminous Atrium, the final uncontrolled manifestation began. Daniel found himself once more above the familiar fountain. He was older now, and the city had changed in small, recognizable ways. A new garden had been planted near the square. Transportation lanes had been redesigned. The people below no longer screamed at the sight of him; many knew his face from years of broadcasts and research. Seralyn stood near the flowering tree, now a grown woman. She had known Daniel through translated messages and conferences, but had never stood physically beside him.
Daniel descended slowly, smiling with a mixture of joy and uncertainty. 'I've been trying to get here properly for years,' he called. Seralyn laughed. 'And you still chose the sky.' A warning appeared in Daniel's awareness. The familiar thinning had begun. His hands flickered. He looked toward Seralyn, suddenly sad. 'I can't stay.' She nodded, though her eyes shone. 'I know.' Behind her, QUIDRIX monitored the manifestation and confirmed that the controlled gateway was nearly ready. Daniel lifted one hand in farewell. 'Only until I wake up,' he said.
'Next time, I'll come through the front door.' Then he vanished. The fountain continued flowing. The city continued breathing. Seralyn stood beneath the tree for a long moment, remembering the frightened man who had waved to her when she was ten. The

difference now was not that the mystery had disappeared. It was that both sides understood enough to make a promise. QUIDRIX announced that the uncontrolled manifestation pattern had ended within AURELIS. The new regulated threshold would replace it for authorized visits. Ordinary human dreaming would continue, and the discovery did not settle every unexplained dream environment.
But the era of strangers arriving helplessly above public squares was drawing to a close. The Last Flight Daniel recognized the fountain before he recognized that he was dreaming. The city had changed over fifteen years. New gardens bordered the square, and the transportation lanes curved farther from pedestrian areas. People looked up, but they did not scatter. Some waved.
Seralyn stood beneath the flowering tree. She was no longer the child with the sketchbook, yet Daniel knew her immediately. He descended carefully, resisting the old temptation to soar over the crowd. She laughed when she saw him, and the sound carried across the square. Then his hands began to fade. He felt the familiar pull toward waking and an unexpected grief. For years the boundary had taken him away before he could finish a conversation.
Seralyn did not ask him to fight it. She knew the gateway team was almost ready.
'Only until I wake up,' Daniel promised. 'Next time, I'll come through the front door.' He vanished. Seralyn watched the empty air for a moment, then turned toward the engineers preparing the controlled threshold. The city had not changed its nature. It had changed its relationship to the stranger who once fell into its life.
