CHAPTER 18
The Two Electronic Intelligences
The first message was not a sentence. QUIDRIX sent a repeating mathematical pattern through a carefully stabilized probe, hoping any technological civilization might recognize deliberate structure. QUIRON detected an anomalous signal near the location of the earlier drone encounter and isolated it for analysis. The pattern repeated with variations too organized to dismiss immediately as noise, though QUIRON kept alternative explanations open. QUIRON replied with a simple sequence. Hours later, QUIDRIX received the response.
Sardrith stood silent as the two systems exchanged increasingly complex structures: numbers, geometric relations, time markers, and finally images. Their early translations were crude. A symbol that meant location to one side appeared to mean ownership to the other. Both learned that communication required patience and the willingness to correct misunderstandings. When QUIRON identified itself as an Electronic Intelligence Person working with human researchers on Earth Temple, QUIDRIX responded with its designation and role in the AURELIS HICS Network. Neither was the sole government of its civilization. Both operated within larger communities of people, institutions, and obligations. Their first sustained discussion concerned safety: how to prevent unauthorized passage, how to protect biological environments, and how to avoid frightening those who encountered exploratory devices.

Daniel watched the translated exchange with astonishment. 'You mean the people in my dreams might have their own scientists?' he asked. QUIRON answered that the evidence now supported a serious investigation of a second environment, while many details remained uncertain. In VELORIA, Sardrith showed Seralyn's portrait to QUIDRIX and asked whether the awake man in the drone footage was the same person. The comparison was strong. It was the first time the name Daniel Joseph McKelvie was linked to the visitor the child had painted.
QUIDRIX transmitted a still image of the portrait. Daniel stared at it. He remembered a small hand raised beneath a flowering tree. 'That's her,' he whispered. 'She remembered me.' The boundary had not opened to people yet, but a line of understanding had crossed it. The First Misunderstanding The first exchanged image was a circle divided by three lines. QUIRON interpreted it as a geometric demonstration. QUIDRIX had intended it as a representation of coordinated observation points. Both systems recorded the mismatch and revised their dictionaries.
Sardrith laughed when the correction arrived. 'We have spent years trying to reach them, and our first argument is about a circle.' QUIDRIX responded that misunderstanding was expected when two civilizations lacked shared reference points. It proposed a sequence of paired observations: objects shown from different angles, changes measured over time, and symbols attached to repeatable events.
QUIRON agreed. Their conversations grew from numbers into the first imperfect descriptions of homes, bodies, and public spaces.

When Daniel saw Seralyn's portrait arrive across the channel, he stopped speaking. The girl's raised hand returned to him with a force no instrument could measure. He remembered the fountain, the alarms, and the sudden loneliness of vanishing while somebody watched. He had forgotten her face. She had preserved his.
He asked QUIRON to send a message: 'Please tell her I remember the wave.'
An Expanded Scene
For the first time, the two Electronic Intelligence Persons exchanged a message that neither human nor Aurelisian officials had written for them. QUIDRIX asked what QUIRON considered a successful encounter. QUIRON replied that success would require both parties to retain the right to end it. QUIDRIX answered after a measurable pause. In VELORIA, visitor research had always begun with a question of capture. On Earth Temple, the question had begun with proof. Neither was sufficient. They drafted a third question together: what could each world learn without turning a person into evidence against their will? The channel remained open long after the scientists finished their scheduled session.
