CHAPTER 13

The Signature That Remained

The court remained closed for days while Sardrith and QUIDRIX examined the data. The lattice had not prevented disappearance, but it had recorded the transition with unprecedented precision. The visitor's measurable form had faded through a sequence of changes, not vanished in a single instant. A faint residual pattern persisted in the sensors after the body was gone. It was not a person, not a voice, and not proof of an afterlife. It was a signal that might reveal how the boundary worked. Reedis wanted the system strengthened.

Sardrith argued that the visitor had shown clear distress and that a more powerful field might cause unknown harm. Alyssra watched the footage, searching the stranger's face for recognition. She saw only confusion and fear. The resemblance to her mother's visitor remained unresolved. 'If this man isn't responsible,' she asked, 'what are we doing to him?'

Sardrith answered that it was a question they needed to ask before the next experiment. QUIDRIX compared the residual pattern with historical incidents. A small number of recordings contained weaker versions of the same transition. Some occurred during apparent changes in the visitor's attention. Others followed sudden expressions of surprise. Sardrith proposed that the manifestation depended on a process external to AURELIS, one that the lattice could perturb but not command. At home, Seralyn watched a public report about the capture. She was older now and

understood enough to be angry. The man she had painted had been trapped, frightened, and watched through glass.

Her father reminded her that the authorities had acted because of real risks. Seralyn answered that safety did not excuse treating a stranger as a thing. Neris encouraged her to write a letter to the Civil Assembly. Seralyn did, asking that any future visitor be offered a way to communicate before being restrained. On Earth Temple, Daniel woke shaking. He remembered a ring of light and a man behind glass. He told QUIRON that his dream had felt like an experiment being performed on him. QUIRON helped him record the memory without asserting that it had occurred outside his mind. But Daniel kept returning to one question: why had the man behind the glass looked so real?

The Empty Platform Reedis visited the containment court after the technicians had gone. The platform was spotless. No damaged equipment, no abandoned clothing, no mark where the stranger had stood. The absence felt like a challenge. He had commanded soldiers through crises that left wreckage behind. This one left only measurements and the memory of a frightened face.

Sardrith joined him. For a while they watched the empty room.

'If he returns, we'll have another chance,' Reedis said.

'At what?' Sardrith asked.

'Finding out what he is.'

'Perhaps we should begin with who.' The general did not answer. Later, QUIDRIX presented the residual signature as a sequence of

small variations rather than a single dramatic spike. Sardrith noticed that the final transition had begun before the field reached maximum strength. That observation mattered: the machine might have recorded a departure it did not cause.

He added the distinction to the official report. It would not satisfy everyone. But it prevented one more uncertain observation from hardening into a false fact.
