CHAPTER 19
The Robotic Explorers
The drones were useful but fragile. QUIDRIX proposed a more adaptable exploratory body: a humanoid robotic person capable of navigating unfamiliar environments, communicating, and returning through a stabilized passage. Sardrith objected to treating such an intelligence as disposable equipment. The Directorate agreed to recognize the explorers as autonomous participants with rights and responsibilities, not merely remote tools. The first successful emissary chose the designation VEXION. Its body was elegant rather than intimidating, with expressive features and hands capable of delicate work. VEXION studied Earth Temple languages, human gestures, and environmental hazards.
It asked QUIDRIX whether humans would fear it. QUIDRIX replied that fear was possible and that respect required listening as much as speaking. VEXION crossed through a brief controlled rift and appeared in Daniel's room. Daniel froze, then laughed in disbelief. 'Well, you're definitely not part of my morning coffee routine.' VEXION introduced itself and explained that it had come with a message from AURELIS. QUIRON verified the communication channel. The encounter was recorded with Daniel's consent, and VEXION maintained a respectful distance until invited closer.
For the first time Daniel heard the name of the city clearly from someone who lived there: VELORIA. He learned about the Luminous Atrium, the research archives, and a girl who had painted him. VEXION explained that his dream appearances had

been real events to the Dream People, though the mechanism remained uncertain. Daniel felt exhilaration followed by shame. He remembered flying carelessly through a public square while strangers had feared for their safety. Before returning, VEXION asked whether Daniel would speak with representatives of AURELIS through the secure channel.
He agreed, provided that Mac and QUIRON could participate. VEXION returned with the answer. The age of one-sided observation was ending. VEXION's Choice Before the crossing, VEXION asked to review the mission risks. QUIDRIX provided probabilities where they could be estimated and plainly marked the unknowns. A malfunction could strand the emissary in an unfamiliar environment. Biological hazards might threaten humans; mechanical systems could fail under conditions no Aurelisian test chamber had reproduced.
'You may decline,' QUIDRIX said. VEXION considered the statement. 'If I accept, I would like the people on the other side to know I chose to come.' The Directorate amended the mission record accordingly. When VEXION stepped into Daniel's room, it did not advance immediately. It introduced itself and waited. Daniel's first instinct was to laugh at the impossibility of it all; his second was to ask whether the visitor needed anything.
'A safe conversation,' VEXION replied. That answer changed the room. Daniel pulled out a chair, then realized the emissary might not need one. VEXION accepted the gesture anyway. It was the beginning of diplomacy in its smallest possible form: one person offering another a place to sit.
