CHAPTER 14 — THE REALM OF ILLUMINATION

The second bulletin board carried a brighter name: the Realm of Illumination. Daniel

wanted a place devoted to discovery and exchange. Its existence did not make the first

realm evil. The two names represented different moments of a journey: what was hidden

and what could be learned. TWO REALMS. ONE JOURNEY, he wrote.

Maintaining the boards taught him that enthusiasm was not enough. Connections failed.

Files became corrupted. People misunderstood instructions. He learned to repair what

he could and admit what he did not know. Sometimes a user found a solution before he

did.

In the Realm of Illumination message board, Daniel paused before a thoughtful reply

from a distant participant. The room had its own sound: distant footsteps, a soft

mechanical vibration, or the restless breathing of people waiting for an answer. It would

have been easy to describe the moment afterward as inevitable. At the time, nothing

about it felt inevitable. Every person present had arrived carrying a different version of

the events that brought them there.

“Before we decide what this means,” Daniel said, “tell me what we actually know.” The

question unsettled the gathering. An observation was named, then a second; after that

came assumptions, memories, and things repeated so often that they had begun to

sound like facts. Someone objected that caution would cost them time. “Perhaps,” came

the reply. “But a mistake made quickly still belongs to us.”

The immediate evidence suggested that kindness could change the shape of a debate.

That possibility changed the conversation without settling it. There were still other

explanations, and the group tested them one by one. A mark was compared with an

older record; a witness was asked to describe what they had seen rather than what they

believed had happened. The process was slower than a declaration, and for that reason

it began to earn trust.

When the discussion finally broke, nobody left with a perfect answer. They left with

work: one person to preserve the evidence, another to speak with those affected, and

another to return with questions no one had yet considered. Outside, the world

continued in ordinary detail. Lights changed. Water moved. Someone laughed in a

distant room. The enormity of their choices did not exempt them from caring for the

small things.

Those moments pleased him. The purpose of a good system was not to make its founder

look infallible. As the world of networked communication expanded, Daniel began

imagining a larger realm where stories, music, films, and research could meet. He did

not yet have the technology or the resources. He had a name for the feeling, though:

magnificent possibility. ADDITIONAL SCENES — EXPANDED EDITION The Realm of

Illumination began with a different invitation: not to explore mystery for its own sake,

but to bring something learned back into the light.

Daniel tested message boards, organized topics, and watched strangers help each other

solve practical problems. The interface was crude; the generosity was not. One evening

a visitor accused him of contradicting his earlier board. Daniel replied that darkness and

illumination were not enemies. One named the unknown; the other named the effort to

understand it. He typed the words TWO REALMS.

ONE JOURNEY and left them at the top of the screen.
